Important Change to New York State Eviction Protections

Posted on August 21, 2021 by peppa

On August 12, 2021, the United States Supreme Court temporarily struck down the New York State COVID-19 Emergency Eviction and Foreclosure Prevention Act (“CEEFPA”). CEEFPA is the law that created the Hardship Declarations and delayed eviction cases.

Because of this ruling, your eviction case may now move forward; however, you should NOT move out of your apartment. You still have rights! Several laws and rules may still protect you from eviction.

New York City residents may have a right to an attorney. For individual legal questions, call (718) 557-1379 or (212) 962-4795 from Monday through Friday between 9 AM and 5 PM. For those who live outside of New York City, call the statewide hotline at (833) 503-0447, open 24-hours a day and seven days per week.
